CECAFA CHALLENGE CUP: We have slim chance to qualify for semis – Mudathiri
Zanzibar’s national team captain Yahya Abbas Mudathiri has said they still have a chance to qualify for the semi finals of the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.
Mudathiri made it clear that they have no option but to try and beat the defending champions Kenya in their last group B game on Saturday.
“We still have that slim chance and we must go all out and try to use it,” added the skipper who added that all the other players are aware of the hurdle they have.
The Zanzibar Heroes opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Sudan in a match where Ahmada Ibrahim Hamada was sent off. The Heroes went on to suffer a 1-0 defeat to the Kilimanjaro Stars of Tanzania.
But Mudathiri has made it clear that although they have made their work harder, they will have no alternative but to win and also hope that the result of the match between Tanzania and Sudan is to their advantage.
Suleiman Ali Hemed, the Zanzibar Heroes coach said his team has simply been unlucky because they are not being sharp at goal. “We are playing good football, but lacking the final punch,” added the coach.
Defending champions Kenya and Uganda are the only teams that have so far qualified for the semi final stage.
On Friday Djibouti will face Eritrea, while the Swallows of Burundi take on Somalia in Group B matches.
The regional tournament will climax on December 19th with the play-off for third place and the final.
