CECAFA CHALLENGE CUP: Zanzibar Heroes to open against Sudan
The Zanzibar Heroes will start their 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup campaign against Sudan.
Coach Hemed Suleiman’s team will battle Sudan on December 8th in a Group B match in Kampala. The regional tournament will take place in the Ugandan capital Kampala December 7-19th.
In the revised draw and fixture released by the Secretary General of the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA), Nicholas Musonye on Wednesday, Sudan has now been moved to Group B, while Djibouti is moved to Group A.
Musonye said the changes were made after guest side Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Ethiopia pulled out of the tournament.
“We wish to bring to your attention that we knock-out DR Congo, Ethiopia and South Sudan because they could not fulfill some obligations passed by the CECAFA consultative meeting in Addis Ababa early this year,” said Musonye.
Zanzibar Heroes who arrived in Uganda on Wednesday will face Tanzania in the second Group B match on December 10th before taking on defending champions Kenya in the last Group game on December 14th.
Hosts Uganda together with Burundi, Eritrea, Somalia and Djibouti are placed in Group A. The best two teams in each group will qualify for the semi finals to be played on December 17th. The play-off for third place and final will take place on December 19th.
