CECAFA CHALLENGE CUP: Sudan hold 10-man Zanzibar Heroes
A 10-man Zanzibar Heroes team have settled to a 1-1 draw against Sudan in a Group B CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup tie played in Kampala, Uganda on Sunday.
Goalkeeper Suleiman Ahmed Ali kept Zanzibar in the game when he saved a penalty by Salah Emadeldeen after 30 minutes after a handball in the box.
Emadeldeen later had his well taken shot saved after 43 minutes. The Zanzibar Heroes also created some scoring chances but failed to be sharp at goal.
In the second half Abdulaziz Makame Makame gave Zanzibar the lead after 55 minutes after the Sudan defenders failed to clear out of danger. But the Sudan team returned to fight and pilled pressure on the Zanzibar Heroes.
With few minutes to the final whistle Zanzibar’s Ibrahim Hamada Ahmada was sent off after receiving a second booking. Substitute Montasir Osman Yahia leveled matters for Sudan from a tight angle after 90 minutes.
Sudan’s stand in coach Elfatih Ahmed Bani Abubaker said he was happy with a draw since they battled hard against a good side.
“Sudan really pressed my team and played well. But after this draw we need to go back to the drawing board to plan for our next game,” said Zanzibar’s coach Suleiman Ali Hemed.
In the second Group B game defending champions beat Tanzania 1-0 with Hassan Abdallah netting after 4 minutes.
Kenya now top the Group with 3 points, while Zanzibar and Sudan are toed on a point each and Tanzania are bottom with no point.
