Mtibwa Sugar stop Yanga to storm 2020 Mapinduzi Cup final
Vodacom Tanzania Premier League side, Mtibwa Sugar FC are through to the final of the 2020 Mapinduzi Cup taking place in Zanzibar.
After a 1-1 draw in a fast paced match played at the Amaan Stadium on Thursday, Mtibwa Sugar humbled Yanga SC 4-2 in penalty kicks.
Deus Kaseke gave Yanga SC the lead after 37 minutes, but the hard fighting Mtibwa Sugar FC leveled matters at the stroke of full time through Shomary Kibwana. Mtibwa Sugar FC eventually proved supreme in the penalty kicks winning 4-2.
To reach the semi finals Yanga SC started with a 2-0 win over Zanzibar Premier League side Jamhuri SC, while Mbibwa Sugar FC needed a 4-2 win in penalties against another Zanzibar team Chipukizi FC to progress.
On Friday in-form Simba SC who currently top the Vodacom Tanzania Premier League will face Mapinduzi Cup defending champions Azam FC in the second semi final match at the Amaan Stadium.
Azam FC stopped Zanzibar’s Mlandege FC 1-0 in their first game of the tournament, while Simba SC outsmarted Zimamoto SC 3-1.
The tournament that attracted eight teams and organized under the government of Zanzibar through the Ministry of Youth, Arts and Culture will climax with the final to be played on January 13th.
Teams from Tanzania that took part in the tournament include; Yanga SC, Azam FC, Simba SC and Mtibwa Sugar FC, while Mlandege SC, Jamhuri SC, Chipukizi FC and Zimamoto SC are from Zanzibar.
