Cecafa will not hold 2020 Senior Challenge Cup

Zanzibar will not have the chance to test their national team this year after the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) announced that only two Youth tournaments will take place this year.

During an executive meeting for Cecafa held last Saturday in Arusha, Tanzania, it was decided that since the season has been disorganized due to COVID-19, only the Afcon U-17 and Afcon U-20 qualifiers will take place.

Cecafa announced in a press release on October 15th that the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier will now take place November 22 to December 6th in Tanzania, while the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers will now take place December 13-28th in Rwanda.

The new Cecafa Executive Director, Auka Gecheo explained that the two qualifier tournaments will feature 10 teams each which will be in two pools. After the pool stages, the top two teams will proceed to the semifinals. He said the secretariat will announce the dates for the draw of the Tournament which will be done virtually.

The Senior Challenge Cup, Women’s Challenge Cup, Kagame Club Championships and Women’s U-17 Challenge Cup will all not be played this year.
