2021 MAPINDUZI CUP: Can Namungo stop Simba SC in semi final clash?

The 2021 Mapinduzi Cup enters the semi-final stage this afternoon pitting Vodacom Tanzania Premier League sides at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.

Young Africans (Yanga) will battle Azam FC in the first contest, while giants Simba SC take on Namungo FC in the second semi-final clash.

The biggest question remains if Namungo can raise to the occasion and stop Simba? In their last meeting the two sides settled for a draw in the Vodacom Tanzania Premier League.

But with the two Tanzanian sides still holding the flag high in the CAF competitions, a lot more is expected on the pitch.

Azam FC sealed their place in the knock out stage last night after stopping Malindi FC 1-0 with a penalty converted by skipper Agrey Morris. The Ice Cream makers started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Zanzibar Premier League reigning champions Mlandege FC.

But Azam FC will come against a Yanga side that has showed lots of consistency this season which sees them top of the Vodacom Tanzania Premier League. Yanga kick started the tournament with a goalless draw against a defensive Jamhuri FC side, before picking a 1-0 win against Namungo FC in the second Group A match.

Cedric Kaze, the Yanga coach has made it clear that they will have to take their chances because this is the knock out stage. “We need to be sharp at goal and cautious at the back,” added Kaze.

The second semi-final between Simba and Namungo promises to be a tight contest with questions if the later can prove a point this time round. The two teams settled for a goalless draw in their last face-off in the League.

Simba SC who are playing in the tournament minus some of their players who are part of the national team preparing for the Total CHAN tournament stopped Chipukuzi 3-1 in their opening match before seeing off Mtibwa Sugar 2-0.

For Namungo FC they kick started the tournament with a 1-0 defeat to Yanga, before returning to pick a 2-0 victory against Jamhuri FC. The Namungo side will hope that Erick Kwizera and Stephen Sey find their scoring form, while Simba look to Meddie Kagere, Miraji Athumana and Hassan Dilunga.
