Zanzibar to take part in CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup
The Executive Director of the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) has said Zanzibar has confirmed participation in the CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup.
“Zanzibar and Tanzania have also confirmed participation in the Challenge Cup to take place next month,” said Auka Gacheo on Monday.
The regional tournament which opens the CECAFA 2021 calendar will take place in the Ethiopian town of Bahir Dar between July 3-18th.
Gacheo said the draws for the tournament will be made before the end of this week and Member Associations will be asked to communicate when their teams will arrive in Ethiopia.
CECAFA has also allowed each team that will participate to field three over age players at the U-23 CECAFA Challenge Cup.
According to the rules and regulations of the tournament, the competition is limited to players 23 years old or young and each team will be allowed three over age players.
CECAFA has stated that all players of the teams must have been born on or after 1st, January, 1998 and the lower limit must be at least 18 years by the end of the calendar year in which the competition is played.
Incase a member association has fielded more than three over age players, that player shall be disqualified and or replaced, while the team could face disqualification, a ban or asked to pay a fine.
Besides the CECAFA teams that have confirmed participation, the U-23 team of the Democratic Republic of Congo will also feature as guests.
